The Red Sea

Red Sea lies in Africa and Asia. It seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean. In occupies only a part of the Great Rift Valley and has a surface area of 438, 000km2. The lake has a maximum depth of 2211 metres and covers a distance of 2250 km. The shallow parts of it support the marine life and corals. Its home to over 1,000 species, and 200 soft and hard corals. The sea is surrounded by other notable waterways like the Suez Canal and the Sinai Peninsula.

Red Sea lies on arid land and semi-desert. The climate consists of two distinct monsoon seasons. The monsoon winds are caused by the heating of the land surface and sea. There is the eastern and northeastern monsoon. It's one of the most saline water bodies in the world. This is caused by the high evaporation. This is aggravated by the presence of the two features; The Gulf of Aden and the Gulf of Sue. This features trigger evaporation of water in the north and relatively hot water in the south.

Red Sea has a very rich and diverse ecosystem. There are more than 1000 species of fish that have been recorded. There is another category of deepwater fish that are 42 in number. The rich ecosystem is due to the 2,00km coral reef extension along the coastline. The reefs are estimated to be more than 5,000 years old. They are usually made up of stones referred to as acropora and porites corals. The coastal reefs are the most visited. There are around 40 species of shark.
