"Cambodia" Chattynatty's photos around Angkor Wat, Cambodia Video Clips. Duration : 0.87 Mins.

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Angkor Wat, Cambodia by TravelPod blogger Chattynatty titled "Cambodia". TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Chattynatty's travel blog entry: "I don't know where to begin....I have never seen poverty like I did on my trip into Cambodia. I chartered a mini bus from Trat to the Northern border and crossed into Poipet. It took us 9 hours to get to the border and then we got our visas and crossed into Cambodia and loaded onto a bus, a rickety old bus! I can't even express to you the state of the road. It was worse than any of dad's logging roads after a rainy season. A pot hole is more like a pond. I think I was airborne out of my seat more than I was sitting in it. Our group of bus travelers managed to have fun though, we laughed had some beers and then the Swedes brought out the Vodka! The dust from the road found its way through all the cracks in the bus and we choked on a light haze. I was tired but got a second wind once we left the border on route to Angkor Wat. People live in shacks along the dusty road and I mean shacks, I have built tree forts better! Every once in a while there would be a murky body of water that I can't even justify calling a pond. It looked more like a mud puddle with green stuff growing on it and there would be families bathing in it. At times I could see families gathering in a circle, cross legged in the dirt to eat their supper. Several small children and animals walked along side of the ...

Entry from: Chiang Dao, Thailand Entry Title: "The Tribe Has Spoken" Entry: "One of the main things on my list is getting in some good hiking in Northern Thailand. I have read all about treks in the guidebooks and it seems the best way it to book a trek through a tour operator, otherwise you'll get lost in some hill villages where noone speaks English. So I booked a 3-day, 2-night Trek through a company called PandaTours, the same company that booked me that lemon of a trip yesterday. Panda leads this trek themselves, whereas the 1-day trips that I took to the Golden Triangle are actually lead by another company. Turns out this is a good thing, as the trek turns out to be great and takes through the Doi Chiang Dao area, where we see no other tourists the entire time. There are 10 of us in the group- Australians, Spanish, and British- I was the only American, which has been typical of my experience here, not nearly as many Americans as Europeans and Ozzies. On the 1st day, we visit a small tribal village containing what is called the Long-Necked women. They are a group of the Karen tribe and they wear heavy gold rings on their necks, arms, and legs. The effect is that their collarbones get compressed downwards, stretching their necks so that they end up with lock necks. Historically, they have done ...

Entry from: Bangkok, Thailand Entry Title: "Safari World" Entry: "One of the largest theme parks in Thailand is Safari World, on the northern outskirts of Bangkok. According to their brochure it is "Thailand's greatest and most popular open zoo and show park". They also claim to have "world class shows" and an "oasis for animals" which is probably going a bit too far. It is certainly a great day out for the family and that is where I took Nong Grace yesterday as her school has now broken up for the summer holidays. Safari World is split into two sections. Namely Safari Park and Marine Park. You don't actually have to visit both as there are separate tickets for each. However, a combined ticket costs 700 baht for foreign adults with another 200 baht for the boat ride which we didn't do. For an average sized family, that works out to be an expensive day out. We decided to first visit Safari Park which was probably the highlight. This is an open park area with hundreds of wild animals roaming around. If you don't have your own car like us then you can join coach tours. However, having your own transport means that you can take your time and stop anywhere to take pictures. You can also wind down your windows to get better pictures. Nong Grace loved this area. It was a great opportunity to get up ...

Entry from: Koh Lanta, Thailand Entry Title: "Finding Friends at The Lost Turtle" Entry: "When we arrived at the Kaw Kwang Beach Resort we were greeted by a fellow who took our bags and a waiter bearing a tray with ice cold glasses of juice to drink while we checked in. The resort sits out on a point called Kaw Kwang Beach (Deer's Neck) and there is ocean on three sides with a small coral reef in front of the resort. The bungalow is spectacular. Clean, cozy with big shady trees over our covered deck. Apparently the bungalows are new as five years ago the tsunami wiped out much of the resort. We spoke to a man from England who has been coming to this resort for twenty years and he said the coral reef is also recovering nicely. I spoke yesterday with a waitress at the Nature Beach Resort about the tsunami. She described how incredibly strange it all was and told of the ocean being "sucked" out to sea with the first wave leaving the fish flopping and gasping on the sand. But then came the tidal wave. She said everyone at the resort ran in time and the only injuries sustained at their hotel were broken bones, arms and legs. It was obvious this experience was still very new and fresh in her mind. (Also, I must say that we felt somewhat guilty changing resorts since once the changes were made our last night ...

I flew up to Chiang Rai, which is quite close to the Laos / Myanmar borders. The area is well know for its hill tribe villages. I met an English guy and Dutch couple, and decided to organise a couple of tours in the area. The first day was to see some of the hill tribe villages near Chiang Rai. We started out early on our boat trip up the river, so we thought we would miss the other tourists. Even though, the tour buses beat us there, and we were shocked by the number and impact that tourism had had. We did a small hike into the surrounding hills, but all of us came away quite unimpressed. The next day we hired scooters so we could drive around and see some other sights. The first was a village where a number of different tribes had been brought together. The most famous people are the long necked Karen, who are mostly based in Myanmar, but are fleeing into Thailand because of persecution. The women of this tribe wear rings around their necks, so over the years their necks become longer. Picture is below, but again not for me, felt like a human zoo. By bus from Chiang Mai, I went to Nan, in the very eastern part of Northern Thailand. My friend Nine is from that region, so I was curious what it was like. As I did a bit of research, a couple of things drew my interest further: Wat Phumin, with its wall murals, and the Nan National Museum. What I was not prepared for was how easy-going and off-the-beaten-track Nan is. Westerners are a rare sight (I think I saw five in my three days and two nights there), and I was the source of much local curiosity as I wandered through a fascinating evening market on a side street across from the hotel where I stayed. The first indication of the quiet nature of Nan was crossing streets in the morning on the way to Wat Phumin. I barely had to look both ways before stepping off the curb. Quite different from Chiang Mai. Wat Phumin didn't disappoint. The central building holds four glittering Buddha statutes as its central shrine, and walls covered with a mural depicting elements of Buddhist cosmology, scenes of everyday life and early contact with Europeans. The last hour was the most amazing road ever...potholes like you've never seen. We spent a whole hour negotiating something that looked like a BMX course in the back of this little family Toyota.
